Founding director

Peter Toohey

Australian businessman Peter Toohey has been at the forefront of the liquor and wine industry for over three decades. Have one meeting with Peter and you’ll see that he’s a force to be reckoned with, an industry leader who gets things done. He has attained an impressive results-driven track record of delivering consistent market successes within the sector across Australia.

As the founding partner of Toohey/Mann consulting, Peter’s industry experience, insider knowledge and expansive network have helped establish a solid foundation for his new advisory business. 

With extensive experience within the wine and liquor industries that encompasses retailing, online, on-premises, mergers and acquisitions, divestments, export and startups, Peter has been innovating for years and challenging the business norm with informed and proven models across a range of different industries. 

Peter has developed wine and liquor brands from concept to shelf, including production, brand development and marketing. He has served in the capacity of Senior Executive and Non-Executive Director, in private and startup company environments, and as such has an innate understanding of every element of large scale business. His export experience expands into the world’s major markets.

E-Commerce:
- Butterfly.com.au was a disruptor being the first wine auction site to hit the Australian wine market at the height of the dot com revolution in the early 2000’s.
- Wine Boss; internet winery cellar door sales portal and winery market place.

Mergers:
- Merger of Butterfly.com and Australian Wine Supply.
- Merger of Australian Wine Supply and Beelgara Estate Wines.
- Merger of Beelgara Estate Australia and Cumulus Vineyards to create Cumulus Wines.

 Wine Brand Development:
- Pepperton Estate Wines.
- Two Thumb Wines.
- Goodwyn Estate Wines.
- The Vines.
- Beelgara Estate & Black Label Wines.
- Habitat Wine brand.
- Rebranded the Moss Bros Wine brand.

Divestments / Trade Sales:
- Sold Toohey Brothers Fine Wine Merchants (9 retail outlets in NSW) to Woolworths Ltd.
- Sold NSW retail liquor outlet to Coles Group.
- Part of the management team that sold 33 hotels in the Tavenor Hotel Group with outlets across NSW, VIC & SA to Woolworths Ltd. 
- Sold the 20,000 Tonne Rossetto winery in the Riverina, NSW.
- Sold the Wine Boss internet business.

Export Wine Markets:
- Developed export markets by appointing and managing strategic distribution partners in Europe, Asia, the UK and China.
- Most notable export achievement was the signing of an exclusive distribution agreement for the Beelgara Wine brand with China’s Bright Food Group. Bright Foods is the second largest SOE in China and one of the largest distributor of alcohol in mainland China. 

MILESTONE ACHIEVEMENTS:

- First to introduce Merchant branded (BOB) wines into the retail liquor landscape as a disrupter to the segment.
- Took Beelgara Wines to Australia’s 20th Largest Winery by Sales volume.
- Took Cumulus Wines to Australia’s 16th Largest Winery by Sales volume.

My name is Paul, having an enquiring mind, I’m fascinated by what humans choose to fight for and sometimes over. I personally love when a firm NO! gives way to an okay maybe? and finally becomes a HELL yes…

Exploring and trading is the tribal experience I most enjoy, discovering the makers of stuff that you connect with, consume and ultimately champion is important to me. When the stuff is a thriving craft beer maker or artisan winemaker being thoughtfully devoured by the market place, that inspires me and makes me savour my work.

My work philosophy: Sustainable growth requires innovative strategies. Sustainable strategies must challenge conventions, leverage both internal and external talent, and focus on agility and creativity.
